Before I start:

I really was NOT gonna post this, but then I thought to myself, "Why the hell not? It's my LJ after all and since I don't add much people as friends, they really don't have to read this. Meaning that if you ended up at this page, it was all YOU.

So I was kinda bored and i decided to flip through the channels to see what was on and i ended up at a documentary. It was called "Genocide" and was released in 1981 (meaning it's ANCIENT). It talked about the Holocaust and the mass murder of the Jew by the hands of the Nazis.

This film brought to my attention something that REALLY pissed me off. But first, let's get something straight, I'm not an idiot! I know that the Nazis did their best to cover the death camps, and I know that they used propaganda to push their citizens to believe all their crap about the Jews being responsible for all their problems. Ok? I know that. If the Nazis were hiding everything, of course the citizens wouldn't know about the death camps. And, if they did know, the Germans believed that Jews weren't really human so why the hell should they care what happened to them right?

What I DON"T understand is how the hell, after the concentrations camps were exposed, nobody, NOBODY knew how it all happened. The Nazis were... astounded, bewildered even. Who knew that 6 million Jews were being killed during the war? Certainly not the 24 men accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Nuremberg Trails. Hermann Goring, once considered to be Hitler's successor. Rudolf Hess, Hitler's Deputy Fuhrer, both had absolutely no idea of the Jewish extermination. I can only imagine that if Josef Mengele had stood trial, he would have suffered a sudden memory loss, causing him to forget all of his experiments on the Auschwitz prisoners. The experiments that earned him the nickname, The Angel of Death.

So, at the end of World War II we have some 6 MILLION Jews dead, about 10 or 11 concentration camps specifically designed to kill these Jews, and absolutely NO ONE is willing to own up to it. So what, every single Nazi was only "following orders"? I would be willing to believe that these men had their families being used against them. I would be willing to believe that...if i hadn't seen some pictures in which there is absolutely no remorse in the faces of these men. In these pictures there are a variety of expressions to be seen: hatred, anger, even amusement at the obliviousness of the newly arrived Jews at Auschwitz. But perhaps the most disturbing thing to see in the faces of the Nazis as blankness. The complete lack of emotion in the face of their atrocities.

A teacher once asked my class why, despite the fact that since WWII there have been many other atrocities committed around the world, the Holocaust continues to remembered with such horror. Why? Because the people who committed these crimes were just that...people. What's worse than being treated even lower than animals by the citizens of your own country? What's worse than having to watch men kill your children? Well, i suppose dying before your children and not knowing what would become of your little ones would be worse. Much worse.

The Jews weren't walking to their deaths like sheep for slaughter, as some believe. But what would those "some" know about the terror of leaving a child behind, alone and at the mercy of the monsters who are killing their parents?

At the end of the documentary I was consumed with a deep reverence of the Jewish community. Like the Western Wall that has truly endured the test of time, the Jews have also endured along with it.
